This steamer set is not worth the price. I read the negative reviews and assumed people were just picky, but that is not the case. I have used this steamer 2-3 times per day since it arrived. The quality is very low; metal is thin and feels cheaply made. The lid cracks and pops as it heats up and cools down. The steamer is not small, but isn’t as big as it looks in the picture. When I am steaming something, if I put the stove on high, water spits out from around the lid making a huge mess. I have to put the stove on medium-high, and set the lid on the edge to prevent it from spitting, which increases the cook time.

If I could do it again, I would not purchase this item. I anticipate I will need to buy another steamer in 6 months or so and will spend a little more to get a better quality item.

Update 1/2013: I did get rid of this. After getting, as a wedding gift, a complete new set of pans, we bought another “Norpro 175 Stainless Steel Vegetable Steamer” which fits inside your existing pans. Nine dollars, and well worth it.

As other reviews have pointed out, the metal is thin, but that’s actually a benefit, not a detriment. Thinner metal will boil the water quicker. You only need thick heat spreading metal if you are actually cooking something in the pot. All this does is boil water. In actual use, I’ve found that you can steam enough veggies for four people, or just put in enough for one. I usually just get the water up to boiling until the steam is vigorously coming out of the top, then turn off the heat and the trapped steam finishes the cooking. Very easy. The top has a nice little steam vent too, but I usually just close it – the top is light enough that enough steam will escape if you have it on full boil, at which point I just turn off the heat. The metal handle to get the steam tray out is useless, so I either spear the veggies, tilt and scoop, or use an oven mitt to grab the tray. I’ve had for over a year now and it still looks shiny and new. Yeah, it doesn’t have the heft of our regular pots, but it doesn’t need to, and after a while you come to appreciate lifting a light pot!

This little pot is fantastic. It’s the perfect size for 1 or 2 people, and I find the quality exceptional for the price. (I paid $30.) The main pot feels like 18/8 (and I think it said so on the box, but I’m not sure), and it holds the heat forever, if you want to turn off the burner and just let it stew.

The “thin metal” others mention is in the steamer insert, and it’s thin for a reason: it allows the contents to heat faster. It isn’t elegant, but then I’m not paying for Cuisinart or KitchenAid either. It’s sturdy, good solid quality, and it’s well though-out: the vent in the glass lid is excellent.

Having moved 3000 miles, and living in temporary — and very reduced — quarters. I am using this pot on a hot plate for pretty much everything, and I just love it. Steam veggies, then remove the steamer and throw some raviolis in the water and 3 minutes later, drain them and add in the steamed veggies. Or, throw in store-bought broth and pre-cooked rice, with leftover veggies, and have a wonderful vegetable and rice soup.

It’s a very serviceable item, and at the lowered price, it’s a steal.
