No more missing feet for me! Great for fix it and forget it meals, sides, and more!, July 27, 2015

Our old crock pot started dying on us over 4th of July weekend. One of the legs disappeared and without the leg, the crock pot dipped to one side. I knew it was time to get a new one when we wanted to make BBQ. The Black & Decker slow cooker has the features that I always look for in a crock pot. First, the crock is removable. If you have every used one of those the older crock pots where you cannot remove the liner, you know how frustrating difficult it could be to clean. This crock pot allows you not only to remove the liner but you can put it into the dishwasher for super simple cleaning. Another feature I like is the clear glass lid. No more lifting the lid and letting your heat escape when you want to peek at your meal. You can see if the liquid is bubbling hot or if you need to add more liquid to keep things from burning. The lid can be placed in the dishwasher as well. If you get anything on the base of the crock pot, just wipe it off and the rest goes in the dish washer. It can’t get much simpler than that!

    Other features I like:
    • Oval liner is not as high as a round crock pot so I can put it in my fridge. This enables me to either throw everything in it the night before, refrigerate it and then start cooking in the morning or I can take the left overs and leave them in the crock pot for reheating the next day if I need to.
    • The temperature gauges allow for a warming feature, this is good if you are going to cook something that people will be eating on for several hours. You can turn it down to warm and let it stay ready to eat as your day progresses.

Overall, I think this is a good crock pot. Feels sturdy and I will not have a leg missing with this crock pot. The legs are not attached to the base of the unit but formed out of the same piece of metal as the rest of the base; although there is a little rubberized tab to protect your counter that can be removed. I have included a photo to show you what I mean.
Great for fix it and forget it meals, snacks, and other treats! So many uses no matter what the season!

For the price and the capacity, this is an excellent slow cooker. It’s pretty basic in its styling, with a 7 quart stoneware pot that is easily removed from the base. There are three settings–low, high, and warm. There is no light to indicate when the unit is on, but you can feel the heat emanating from the base after just a minute or two.

The pot is heavy and thick–the description calls it cream colored, my husband says it’s gray, but I think it’s more of a dark taupe. It is coated all the way around, making it easy to clean and preventing it from staining. The lid does not have a vent built onto it, but it has a bit of a loose fit and the pot has four grooves that allow for venting, as well as provide handy locations to rest a serving spoon or ladle.

The first time I used it, I made chicken tikki masala; despite the turmeric and tomato paste, it didn’t stain, nor did it leave the scent of the food. Cleaning was really easy, as the pot is smooth and wipes out easily with a sponge and hot soapy water.

The cord on the unit is a little short. I can plug it into the outlet on the edge of my island, but I have to keep it about three inches from the edge in order for it to reach. I actually think this is a good thing, as I’ve got a rambunctious 4-year-old running around the house all day. But I can also see this as a drawback for people who might be taking it to an office potluck or somewhere where you need to plug into a lower wall outlet from a table.

Although I didn’t see anywhere in the packaging inserts or pictures, the lid of this crockpot is designed so that it conveniently hangs on the side of the unit when serving. This will lead to steam dripping on the counter/table, but it’s much preferable to losing the lid or having it get inadvertently knocked over.

The 7 quart pot is large enough to cook a whole chicken, a small ham, a small turkey breast, or large quantities of soups or stews. The oval pot also allows for better layering than a standard round slow cooker pot.

This isn’t a high end slow cooker, but it’s a good sturdy one that will meet the needs of my family of four for years to come.

    OUCH! That’s Hot!, July 26, 2015

A good basic crockpot is a must in a busy, family kitchen; or rather that’s always been my motto. I love being able to assemble a casserole, or a roast while the kids are in school, so that when they get home I can focus on them.

Unfortunately this particular model seems to run VERY hot. I will say that I love the gray insert and the pattern certainly looks prettier sitting on my counter than my go to (black insert with black casing), but even on low this heats up very fast-to the point where touching it can actually burn your hand. Nevermind what it does to the food.

I’ve been cooking with a crockpot for almost 20 years, and I know not filling up a larger pot can burn the food very quickly, so before using this I made sure that I was going to cook enough to properly fill it. I did, and the food still turned mushy with some burnt pieces around the bottom edges.

I’d say if you have a home with no curious kids, and you were there to watch the food (or at least peek at it every couple of hours) this is a fine basic model, But I think I’ll stick with what I’ve been using.
