The Oh She Glows Recipe App is here!!

Artichoke Collage_lessblue

Today is a big day! After years of dreaming, planning, and hard work, we’ve officially launched the Oh She Glows – Healthy Plant-Based Recipes app for iPhone and iPad devices! You guys have been asking for an OSG app for years, and I’m so excited the day is finally here. Many of you will now be able to cook from your phone or tablet with ease, or meal plan while commuting to and from school or work with convenient offline access. Think of this app as your personal OSG on the Glow!

Our app features the most popular Oh She Glows recipes from the past 8 years (oh boy, did I rediscover some gems), and includes brand-new photography, with a cohesive, sleek new look. All of the recipes have been edited and streamlined, and many have been improved as I cooked my way through Oh She Glows’ archives. You can be confident that the recipes in our app are delicious, super reliable, and will wow your family and friends! Check out our short video below for a sneak peek:

This project has been a huge labour of love involving myself, Eric, our app team, and also hundreds of you—our awesome beta testers who applied via our newsletter. Thanks to those of you who tested our app during the development phase, we were able to improve it in many ways, and add all kinds of useful features based on your feedback.

For example, we created a killer search function that sorts recipes by keywords, dietary info, dish types, and seasons, as well as handy filters like freezer-friendly, kid-friendly, quick and easy, budget-friendly, and more.

Features we’re excited about:

– Enjoy more than 60 Oh She Glows recipes (and growing!), including 50 fan-favourites plus 11 new recipes exclusive to the app (see the bottom of this post)
– Browse through beautiful full-screen, high-resolution food photography
– Strike out ingredients and directions as you cook so you don’t lose your place
– Customize your own favourites list with your most-loved recipes
– Easily view cook time, prep time, serving size, headnotes/tips, and allergy info for each recipe
– Add your own notes to the recipes to save/record your own recipe modifications
– Take recipes with you on the go with convenient offline access
– Search for recipes with ease using ingredient keywords or by recipe title
– Filter your recipes based on dietary/allergy info, season, dish type, and more
– Cook without worry that your device will go to sleep with our anti-lock feature
– Enjoy split view on your iOS 9 iPad Air 2, iPad Mini 4, and iPad Pro

Best of all, each new recipe that I post on the blog in the future will upload to the app, so the app will continue to grow and grow over the years! Also, keep your eyes peeled for exclusive recipe bundles only found in the app. (Spoiler Alert: there are a couple bundles in there right now as our thank you for purchasing the app!)

I’m thrilled to let you know that we’re donating 10% of the proceeds from the first week’s app sales to Blessings in a Backpack Canada, a children’s charity that is near and dear to our hearts. Each Friday, Blessings in a Backpack provides backpacks of food to children all across the country who otherwise may not get enough to eat on the weekends. Just $ 120 feeds a child on the weekends for an entire school year. How awesome is that?! I’m so excited to be working with Executive Director Karen Green on this wonderful initiative, and together we’ll be directing our donation to local children right here in the Greater Toronto Area.

I truly hope that you’ll love this app, share the recipes with loved ones, and use it in your kitchens (and on the glow!) as much as we do. Thank you all for your continued support, and for the encouragement to make this recipe app a reality when I mentioned the idea a few years ago.

You can download the app here, or simply click the button below!

10-Spice Mix Gift Jars + Printable 10-Spice Veggie Soup Recipe!

ohsheglows10spicemix-3286

If you’re looking for a lightening fast and cost efficient homemade holiday gift, I have just the thing for you!

I love to make homemade food gifts for friends and family around the holidays. It’s fun to give them and all, but mainly, I love having a reason to buy more glass jars. SEE ERIC, I ACTUALLY NEEDED THESE JARS. And cute tags…oh my goodness, the cute tags. I die.

I almost didn’t get a chance to make any homemade gifts this year because the past two weeks have been consumed with the cookbook photoshoot (behind the scenes one, two, three). So, we just started our Christmas shopping/gift planning on Saturday which was fun. Our tree is still not up yet, but it is what it is. We’re squeaking in at the last minute this year, and I’m just going to have to make peace with the fact that the holiday season is never “perfect”. Isn’t it so much better when you just accept that?

My motivation was running a bit low after the excitement of last week, but sometimes inspiration strikes when I least expect it. I got a text from my sister Kerrie on Friday night. She wrote:

“Mixing up your 10-spice mix and putting them in jars with your recipe attached! I’m giving some out for Christmas! How’s that for an idea?”

Then she attached a photo. Immediately, I knew I had to do this.

Then a short while later, I received another text from Kerrie:

“Do NOT touch your face when using the CAYENNE pepper!!!! OH MY GOODNESS!!”

I just about died laughing.

A short while later, another text:

“A frozen face cloth helps.”

She kills me, she really does.

So, a big thanks to Kerrie for this post’s inspiration (and hilarious personality). I love you.

Also, thanks to Eric for being my crafting partner in crime yesterday (he was the one who insisted we do this idea!) and for being the best hand model eva. If you are following me on snapchat, you saw the entire process (as well as the Crispy Almond Butter Cookies from my cookbook)! We had a blast.

The fine print: Do not attempt to use a mixing bowl this small. I only used it for the photo and then promptly transferred the spices into the biggest, baddest bowl I own (a bamboo Caesar salad bowl that could feed 25 people – 3 pics down).

10-Spice Mix Gift Jars

Vegan, gluten-free, grain-free, no bake/raw, nut-free, oil-free, refined sugar-free, soy-free

This 10-Spice mix takes just a few minutes to throw together, and it can be used in a variety of dishes, such as soups, stews, pastas, potatoes, salad dressings, and more! I love using it in my 10-Spice Vegetable Soup with Cashew Cream (also see: page 137, The Oh She Glows Cookbook) which is one of my most loved soups of all-time (and a reader favourite, too!) These spice jars make a quick and easy holiday gift that won’t set you back much money. Just pair the spice mix with the soup recipe or, if they don’t have it, The Oh She Glows Cookbook with the page bookmarked.

Yield
7 packed cups of spice mix

Total Time

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups smoked paprika
  • 1 cup garlic powder
  • 1 cup dried oregano
  • 1 cup onion powder
  • 1 cup dried basil
  • 2/3 cup dried thyme
  • 1/2 cup ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup white pepper (optional)
  • 1/2 cup fine sea salt
  • 1/3 cup cayenne pepper

Directions:

  1. Gather 8-9 (3/4 cup/175 ml capacity) glass jars.
  2. Add all of the spices into an extra-large bowl (I used a huge Caesar salad bowl) for easier mixing.
  3. Whisk together all of the spices until thoroughly combined. It takes a while to mix it all together, but keep going until you don’t see any clumps or patches of spice.
  4. Divide the spice mix between small jars using a funnel.
  5. Secure lid, tag, and ribbon on each jar.
  6. Print off the 10-Spice Vegetable Soup recipe and give the recipe (or The Oh She Glows Cookbook) with the jar for a fun gift! Shake the jar before each use.

1) To make the soup: If the gift recipient doesn’t have a high powered blender such as a Vitamix (which can get the cashew cream in the soup very smooth), I recommend making a note for them that they can substitute 3/4 cup of cashews for 1/2 cup of raw cashew butter. It’ll blend much easier.

2) I bought my spices in bulk at a bulk food store called Bulk Barn. I also found the jars there too. You can also find small jars for a good price at the Dollarstore.

Smoothie Bonanza – The recipe bundle

gks_smoothies_start

Woot woot! We are so thrilled to present this little project that we have been working on lately! We have been turning fruit, berries, vegetables and liquids into smoothies practically every day for the past couple of years. Sometimes we make them for breakfast, other times for dessert, and always after a workout! We can’t think of a fresher, quicker and more delicious way to boost our bodies with energy. Since smoothies have become such a common meal for us, we have picked up some tricks and ideas on how to make them more interesting. Nowadays, we often add extra berries, fruit, nuts or grains to the glass to create a contrast in flavour and texture. We also tend to pour them in layers for a more interesting and beautiful drinking experience.

We have gathered 14 lip-smacking smoothie recipes into a recipe bundle that we just have released as an in-app purchase for our Green Kitchen app. It’s available for $ 1.99 and the difference from the normal (free) recipe updates in the app is that all these recipes are entirely new and previously unpublished. Make sure you have the latest update of the app and there should be a new box with more info at the top of the grid. You need to have iOS 8 installed to be able to install the update. These recipes are available in English (imperial and metric), German, Italian, Spanish and French inside the app.

We are of course bias but we feel pretty damn proud of these smoothies and hope they will give you new ideas and inspiration next time you are starting up the blender.

Here is a preview of all the recipes.

gks_smoothies

Just like with our Green & Clean recipe pack, 6 months ago, we have also gathered these smoothies in a mini e-book. This is to accomodate those of you that don’t have an iphone or ipad but still want to try the recipes. It’s available for $ 2.99 and can be ordered and downloaded here. We are really hoping you will enjoy these!

To give you a preview, we are also sharing one of the recipes here today. It is a fun little method of ours where the topping (muesli, granola, rolled oats, puffed grains or nuts) is placed at the bottom of the glass and then covered with a few spoonfuls of yogurt and filled up with the smoothie. A quick, delicious and slightly unusual way to have breakfast and it also looks spectacular with the different layers. In this recipe we use muesli and thick yoghurt for the bottom two layers and a simple but delicious blueberry smoothie recipe on top, but we encourage you to use this as a starting points and try the technique with some of the other smoothies in the bundle or any smoothie of your own.

Upside-Down Breakfast Smoothie

Smoothie Ingredients
1 cup / 120 g frozen blueberries
1 blood orange or a regular orange, peeled and roughly chopped
1 banana, peeled and roughly chopped
1 cup / 250 ml plant milk of choice
1 tsp ground cardamom

Layers
1 cup / 125 g muesli, granola, puffed grains or just rolled oats
1 cup / 250 ml full-fat plain unsweetened Greek or Turkish yogurt (for a vegan alternative, use coconut yogurt or organic GMO-free soy yogurt)

Add all smoothie ingredients to a blender and blend on a high-speed until smooth. Divide the muesli between two glasses. Spoon the yogurt over the muesli in each glass. Pour the smoothie on top and serve with a spoon.
