I Love It…So Far…But Make Sure You Buy The Extended Warranty, August 15, 2014

I’ve been using this for 1 month now and have to say that it is by far the best microwave oven I’ve ever used. It is not small in any way and nearly any size dish or pan you can buy that can go into a microwave will easily fit into this oven. It seems solidly built including the door mechanism which is a problem with every other Panasonic microwave I could find a review about. It is made of plastic but it feels good and tight…so far.

As far as cooking goes this thing is amazing! It heats things very quickly just like most microwaves do. What makes this microwave so amazing is that it doesn’t just cycle from 100% power to warm only to simulate a lower than 100% power level. When you set this oven to 50% power that is exactly what it runs at, all the time. You never hear it kicking on and off like every other microwave I’ve ever used The food does not start boiling all over and then stop and then boil and stop again. It makes a huge difference when you cook things. Chicken comes out of this microwave just like if you baked it in a conventional or convection oven (minus the brown look of course). It is not rubbery or all dried out on the edges or thin parts. It is delicious and gets done in a quarter of the time. Oh yeah, and I have yet to melt or warp a foam plate in this oven.

The sensor reheat is probably my favorite feature of this oven. I make my own pasta sauce and learned many years ago not to reheat it in the microwave. They all dry it out by boiling the heck out of it on the outside edges while the sauce in the center of the dish was still ice cold. With this microwave, I put the sauce in a container, put a piece of Glad Wrap over the top, fold a little corner of the wrap back, put it in the oven, push the sensor reheat button, and push start. The oven figures out what heat setting to use and how long to heat it and it comes out perfect every time. The first time I tried it I sat 6 inches away from the door staring into the oven saying you better not ruin my sauce!!!…waiting and waiting for the sauce to start boiling to dry it all out and ruin it…but it NEVER did. After about 4 minutes it beeped and put on the countdown display the time it was still going to heat it and it came out of the oven perfectly and evenly hot throughout the entire container. I didn’t even have to stir it. I was impressed. It also works the same way with everything I have reheated in it. Frozen dinners come out perfect without even setting a time or temperature, just peel back a corner of the wrap, push sensor reheat, and push start..when it beeps 5 times it’s done.

I have still not done a lot with the sensor cook setting but will be trying it out soon. Will update here when I do a few more things with it. The few things I’ve already done have been just as impressive as the sensor reheat function.

I tried the popcorn button and ended up stopping the oven myself when I heard the popping stop. It might have been about to stop it itself but I wasn’t up for ruining a bag of popcorn just to find out. Now when I make popcorn I set it on 1 minute 20 seconds on full power and it is perfect every time.

I’ve used the cook and then keep warm function several times and it works just as advertised. You don’t even have to go back and tell it to keep it warm after it cooks. You enter the cooking time and then tell it to keep it warm when it’s done. I always tell it to keep it warm for 30 minutes even if I don’t think it will take everything else I’m cooking to take that long. Even after 10 or 15 minutes of keeping it warm it hasn’t cooked it death or dried it out, it really does stop cooking and just keep it warm.

Anyone who has ever had a Sharp will appreciate how easy it is to set the clock on this oven. Push the clock button once, type in the time, push the clock button again and you’re done. After having a piece of junk Sharp for a year and half I never did figure out exactly what to do to make it work. Did what the book said and always had to do it again and again before it worked.

As hard as I’ve tried to think of something, I really can not find anything about this oven to complain about. So far I think it is absolutely perfect.

After reading reviews about microwaves for several hours here and at other sites it became very clear that pretty much all microwaves are junk anymore (including Panasonic). I bought this one because I absolutely love the Panasonic shaver I bought and because this appears to be a new model from Panasonic. I couldn’t find a single review anywhere. Hopefully they have fixed all the bugs in the earlier versions of this oven. We will see. I will update here with anything that goes wrong. I purchased the 4 year extended warranty with this because of all the horrible reviews that all microwaves get. If you buy this I would suggest you do the same. If you think you don’t need to, read some more reviews.

    Update…

An Easy Fix for a Panasonic Design Defect!, June 20, 2015

Loved it, the best microwave I’ve ever had.

However, as most, I was experiencing the dreaded door latch failure and was looking at Amazon to purchase a new/different model, thinking that a more expensive one might be better.

I found out that it is indeed a design defect which affect ALL Panasonic models 🙁

The door latch mechanism with the microswitches is mounted onto flimsy, easily bent, very thin sheet metal tabs.

After a while, these tabs will bend, and with them the entire door latch mechanism will move and be misaligned such that the hooks on the door will no longer activate the microswitches.

Slamming the door might help for a while, but it actually contributes to more bending and more misalignment 🙁

Fortunately I found a fix on Youtube: […]

It takes about five minutes to fix (probably temporarily, as the sheet metal tabs might eventually bend out of alignment again):

1- remove the cover (five screws on back, two on side), need special screw bit

2- remove the door latch mechanism (two screws)

3- bend the flimsy sheet metal tabs toward the microwave cavity (i.e. inwards) in order to re-align the door latch mechanism

    4- reassemble.

Note that I also added two wires to support the door latch mechanism, one ties the top of the latch to a hole on the top of the microwave cavity, and the other ties the bottom of the latch to one of the circular vent holes at the bottom of the microwave.

Now that the latch mechanism is all tied up, hopefully the sheet metal tabs won’t bend as easily as before, or at least will take longer to get out of alignment.

Works like a charm (at least for now), and much better than throwing a perfectly good microwave to the dumpster.

Panasonic Makes the Best Microwaves, Just Don’t Call Their Support, January 28, 2015

Well, I know I said I’d never get another Panasonic microwave after the last defective one, but after not being satisfied by the much smaller Samsung (which didn’t actually sense the moisture although it said it did), we decided on this model. The defective NN-SE982S has a new dial that’s touch sensitive, but for some in our house, including me, it didn’t work well. But the real problem in the microwave we got was that the sensor wasn’t working, so after a very unsatisfactory call to Panasonic support (they wanted us to bring the brand new microwave to a service center), we returned it to Amazon (kudos to Amazon) and bought the Samsung 1.4 cu. ft. The “Auto Cook” in the Samsung isn’t automatic at all, it just uses preset times. And the foods heated hot on the outside and cold on the inside. So that got returned too, and we got this one because it has buttons instead of that dial. It’s been working perfectly for the past two months, reheating everything completely and evenly. So Pansonic still makes the best microwaves, just hope you never have to call their support.
