Though you can also juice the skin of a pineapple, especially if it is grown organically, I’d prefer taking off the skin because pineapples grow very close to the soil and I don’t want to contaminate juice with soil sediments.

Remember, if you’re using a horizontal auger juicer, you’ll have to chop it into smaller pieces to fit in the feed chute. Bonus Recipe – Red Pineapple Juice

Here’s a pineapple juice recipe I’ve just concocted this morning.

1 small pineapple (peeled)

1 small beet (peeled)

Small chunk of broccoli stem (around 1 to 2 inches long)

1 large carrot (peeled)

1 Fuji apple

Half a lemon (you can juice lemon with the skin on)

This recipe will yield roughly 750ml of healthy, sweet red pineapple juice (perfect if you have a sweet tooth), and would be a perfect replacement for any canned variety because it does not use any artificial sweeteners. A great way pre-breakfast drink I may add.

The combination of pineapple, apple, carrot and beet maybe too sweet for some people (and I would not recommend this if you suffer from diabetes) but this is a great way to suppress your cravings for sweets the natural way. The lemon adds a tinge of sourness commonly found in processed pineapple drinks and completely eliminates the earthiness of beet.

Confession time!  One holiday dessert I love is pecan pie. 

Problem: It’s full of butter and corn syrup which is no bueno in my book.

That’s OK though because I really love to take seasonal drinks and make them healthier.  I knew that I could make this into a smoothie that would not only taste good, but be good for me…

It took me a few tries but I got it right, and tada! 

Here is the recipe to my Nutcracker Pecan Pie Smoothie.

The juice ingredients and benefits

BANANAS Bananas are loaded with potassium, magnesium and are a good source of fiber.  They are rich in pectin which removes toxins from the body, are a natural antacid, and have high levels of tryptophan which is converted into serotonin, the happy mood brain neurotransmitter.

DATES I added them to this recipe because they make it taste carmel-y and sweet, and have great nutrients. They are good for heart problems, constipation and anemia. 

PECANS  Pecans are good for blood pressure and are high in Vitamin B’s.

NUTMEG/CINNAMON  Not only do nutmeg and cinnamon taste good, they are good for circulation and blood sugar.

The Nutcracker Pecan Pie Smoothie Recipe

INGREDIENTS

3 bananas, fresh or frozen in chunks

4-pitted dates

1/2 cup of pecans

1 tablespoon of vanilla

Pinch of nutmeg

Half a teaspoon of cinnamon

1 cup of almond milk

 

METHOD

Place all ingredients in the blender container.  If using fresh bananas, add a few ice cubes
to the recipe.  Secure lid.  Process slowly at first and then quickly blend
on high speed for 1 minute or until smooth. Pour in a glass and serve.  Dust cinnamon on top if desired.

Optional variations for the Pecan Pie Smoothie

Make it green: You can easily add 1-2 cups of spinach to this recipe without tasting it.  You might have to adjust the liquid if the blender won’t turn over, so just add more almond milk or water.

Sweeten it: If you don’t have dates, substitute with 1-2 tbsp raw honey.

Other nuts:  This is a pecan pie smoothie after all, but you could substitute with cashews or almonds.

Juicing is one of the best ways in getting nutrients into your body minus the fiber. Since the fiber is already out of the picture, nutrients directly get absorbed by the bloodstream. And this is what sets it apart from smoothies.

This method requires a lot of discipline and preparation before and after the fast. Failure in doing so may lead to lethal consequences.

Another way is incorporating juice as a part of your lifestyle, similar to what Neil Martin did. What he did was takeaway unhealthy and addictive processed foods in his diet and incorporated more fruit and veggies in his diet (juicing is a big part of that).

He actually lost weight before he started exercising and had lost a total of around 75 pounds in 12 months.

What you eat plays a huge role in your weight. Neil Martin said that “you cannot outrun your fork” which I found true because no matter how much you exercise, if you eat a diet rich in carbohydrates and a lot of junk food you’ll have a hard time shedding pounds.

How can you safely lose weight without losing muscle mass?

First let me get this out of the way. Having the right BMI (body mass index) equates to a healthy body.

In fact, this is a better indicator than body weight because it helps you know how much body fat you have.

So rather than putting in a lot of fruit in your recipes, make sure to use mostly vegetables and only use fruit as a sweetener because fruits are high in fructose.

Though it is better than synthetic fructose like corn syrup, fructose is still fructose and isn’t utilized by the body like glucose is.

When you drink fruit juice, the absence of fiber means that fructose is absorbed by the blood stream almost immediately and the liver gets overwhelmed.

Since the body’s cells in the body don’t utilize fructose guess what happens to it? It becomes stored fat – fatty acids and bad cholesterol. This equates to weight gain.

Add some protein and (healthy) fat

This is a concept that I wasn’t familiar with until I read Drew Canole’s post here.

I used to think that protein powders are nasty tasting but on the contrary, there are brands that make great tasting protein powders that when combined with the right vegetables will give you a filling and nutrition rich drink that will also supply the body with the protein that your muscles feed on.

Chia seeds are another rich source of protein that you can add to your juice not only for the nutritional benefits but also for a contrasting texture. This is one of the main staples of a lot of smoothie recipes so why not add them to juices.

An ounce of chia seeds (approximately two tablespoons) contains 4 grams of protein. It is also a rich source of antioxidants, Omega 3 fatty acids, fiber, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium.

The best part is it only has 137 calories per ounce and out of the 12 grams of carbohydrates, 10.6 grams is dietary fiber which isn’t digested so when you do the math, the true carb content is just below two grams which is pretty low.

The fiber content makes chia seeds in itself filling and it has another side benefit – it feeds good bacteria to your gut and keeps it healthy.

An alternative to chia seeds would be flaxseeds. This is also a rich source of Omega 3 acids and protein. If you’re adding this to your juice, get the grounded variety so it is much easier to use.

The first thing you’ll need is the right tool which is a juicer.

  • 1 medium sized green apple
  • 2 to 3 handfuls of spinach (more if you’re brave or used to the flavor)
  • Half a lemon (not peeled)
  • Ginger root (one to two inches long, peeled)

How to prepare

Just in case you are using a vertical slow juicer and you’re using spinach with the stems still intact try to chop them into smaller chunks (1” or so) so it does not clog.

For traditional extractors just roll the spinach up in a ball then sandwich it in between the two halves of the apple.

Juice the ginger and lemon afterwards.

Food Fact: Ginger is used by the ancient Chinese to fight a variety of ailments (particularly stomach ailments) and is known to improve circulation.

I’ve already mentioned that cucumber is a diuretic which flushes out excess water. Celery is another diuretic that helps in fighting inflammation as well as high blood pressure.

To complete the green quartet, spinach and green apple is added to the mix. Spinach as I’ve said is a rich source of vitamins and antioxidants that help your body’s immune system to fight free radicals.

Carrot and apple is added to the mix for sweetness and to mask the bitterness of celery.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium cucumber
  • 2 to 3 stalks of celery with the leaves if possible
  • 1 small carrot
  • 1 green apple
  • A couple handfuls of spinach

How to prepare

Start by juicing the green apple followed by a handful of spinach, cucumber, celery then carrot. If you are using slow juicer remember to alternate the ingredients you feed in to maximize the yield.

Drink it as soon as possible

Don’t forget to chop the celery into smaller chunks if you are using a vertical juicer.

How to prepare

Swiss chard leaves are huge but are easy to juice because you can just roll them up.

There is no need to chop them if you are using a centrifugal or horizontal auger juice extractor but on a vertical type like a Hurom H-100 you need to chop them into smaller pieces so it does not clog.

Start by juicing the Swiss chard leaves, ginger, orange, Fuji apple then romaine lettuce.

There is no need to peel the apple. If you are using non organic apple make sure to wash it well to get rid of the pesticide residue.

Make sure to peel the orange because the peel is very bitter but make sure to leave the pity part on.

Food fact: That unlike spinach and Swiss chard, romaine lettuce has low oxalate content which makes this a great alternative for people who suffer from Urolithiasis or urinary tract stones.

Bitter Fruity Goodness

Grape fruit

If you think that all fruits have high fructose content, thing again. The fruits included in this recipe have low fructose content.

Pink grapefruit – 1.2 grams / 100 grams

Lime – n/a (in other words very low)

Pure unsweetened cranberry juice – (9 grams of sugar per 8 ounce cup)

Grapefruit is widely used in a lot of weight loss programs and has been known to also lower insulin another fat causing hormone which means more pound shedding.

Combine all three and you’ll get a very bitter drink that is best taken before every meal – this will suppress your appetite and help you eat less. The ginger is optional if you want some spiciness to contrast the bitter flavor.

  • 2 grapefruits (make sure that it is the pink variety, white ones are a no-no in this recipe)
  • 1 lime
  • 1 cup pure cranberry (for the best results)
  • 2” chunk of ginger (optional)
  • 1 medium cucumber (optional – to dilute and increase yield)

How to prepare

Juice the grapefruit and lime in a citrus juicer.

Run the small chunk of ginger in a juicer, you can include half a cucumber to dilute this drink further if it is too bitter for you.

You can also add a fruit in there like apple for a little sweetness.

Avocado

I called this the green juice and smoothie combo because I combined juice with the avocado smoothie since you can’t juice an avocado.

This drink would be best taken in the morning before breakfast because it is filling and nutritious at the same time. It is filling because you are basically one whole avocado with this drink which will help you quell hunger pangs until lunch time.

Pineapple which has relatively high fructose content (4.8 grams per 100grams) is mainly used as a sweetener to make this drink more palatable. You can add less if you feel that half a pineapple is too much.

Avocado and pear have very low fructose content so you don’t have to worry about these two fruits adding unwanted pounds.

Ingredients

  • Half a medium sized pineapple (without the skin)
  • 1 pear
  • 2 handfuls of spinach
  • One large cucumber
  • 4 celery stalks
  • 1 avocado

How to prepare

Make sure to peel the pineapple then chop it into quarters. It is okay to include the core.

Juice the pineapple, pear, spinach, celery and cucumber in a juicer then set aside.

Cut the avocado in half, take out the pit and scoop out the meaty part and place inside a blender.

Pulse until the texture is smooth then add the juice that you’ve set aside earlier then blend.

Drink immediately afterwards.

Food Fact: Even though avocado contains a lot of fat it isn’t saturated fat that harms the body. It contains Oleic acid, a health monounsaturated fat that quells appetite.

Red Protein Juice

I didn’t know that you could actually add protein powder to fresh vegetable juice. I got this idea from Drew Canole of Fitlife.tv.

The recipe is actually simple he used two beets, a medium sized cucumber and protein powder.

Here’s how he did it.

To be specific he used Sun Warrior chocolate protein powder which tasted great with beet and cucumber.

Ingredients

  • 1 small or medium sized beet
  • 1 medium sized cucumber
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons of sun warrior protein powder

How to prepare

Juice the beet and cucumber in a juicer

Pour the juice inside a blender (in the video Drew used a Nutribullet) then blend.

Drink immediately.

Food Fact: Beet was used by the ancient Romans as an aphrodisiac because it contains boron, a mineral that stimulates our body to produce sex hormones. 

Green Chia

This drink has a nice combination of nutrients and protein in it.

Collard greens aren’t as popular as spinach or kale but in terms of nutritional value we should not neglect it.

It is rich in antioxidants so it will help boost our immune system.

It is a rich source phytonutrients that help with our body’s detoxification.

It is also rich in vitamin K and omega-3 fatty acids which are known to have anti-inflammatory properties.

Lastly, these leafy greens help improve cardiovascular health and prevent heart ailments.

The protein part of the equation comes from the chia seeds.

Ingredients

  • 2 to 3 collard greens
  • 1 medium sized cucumber
  • Half a lime
  • 1 to 2 Fuji apples
  • 1 head of romaine lettuce
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds

How to prepare

Run all the ingredients through a juicer.

Unlike leafy greens that have a strong flavor that can make you gag and vomit, red cabbage has more of a bitter and peppery flavor.

Flaxseed was added to this recipe for protein and fiber.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium red cabbage
  • 1 medium cucumber
  • Half a lemon (unpeeled)
  • 1 tablespoon grinded flaxseed
  • 1 medium green apple

How to prepare

Chop the red cabbage into quarters to fit in the feed chute.

Follow with the cucumber and lemon.

Add the flaxseed after pouring the drink into a cup.

Stir and enjoy.

1 cucumber

2 apples

1 head of romaine lettuce

Core the apple and cut up the cucumber. Juice together and serve. Add crushed ice on a hot day.

Cucumber Pear

1 cucumber

2 pears

Small handful of watercress or arugula

Core the pear and cut the cucumber. Juice together and serve. 

Cucumber Orange Grapefruit

1 cucumber

1 small handful of spinach

1 orange

1 grapefruit

Peel the grapefruit and orange. Cut the cucumber into long slices. Juice together and serve. 

Broccoli Pineapple

4 broccoli spears

½ pineapple

1 tiny bunch of parsley or watercress

Core and cut rind off of pineapple. Juice ingredients together and serve. Dilute with sparkling mineral water to taste.

Broccoli Apple

8 broccoli spears

A few sprigs of parsley

3 apples

Core apples. Juice ingredients together and serve. 

Green Citrus

1 handful of spinach or kale

2 sticks of celery

2 oranges

Peel oranges, wash spinach/kale and cut celery into manageable juicing pieces. Juice ingredients together and serve. If you think this is too green tasting for your kids, add more orange or dilute it with sparkling water to make it bubbly like soda. 

Cucumber Watermelon

1 cucumber

1 thick slice watermelon

Cut cucumber lengthwise into long strips for the juicer. Cut a thick slice of watermelon, and if your juicer is powerful you can leave the rind on. I do not like to juice the rind (personal preference). Juice ingredients together and serve.

Apple Mint

2 stalks of celery

1 apple

4 sprigs of fresh mint

1 kale leaf

1 lime

This is pretty refreshing on a hot day.  Juice the celery, apple, kale, mint and lime (peel optional).  Serve immediately.

It seems like everybody knows someone who has diabetes.

It could be a friend, relative or even an acquaintance.

That isn’t surprising because diabetes is an epidemic.

In this article, I’ll briefly talk about diabetes, the causes and how you can potentially reverse this through juicing and the right diet.

If my father who is in his early seventies was able to do it you can too.

Disclaimer: These recipes (particularly the first one) are so potent (when combined with medication) that it can excessively lower down blood sugar level to dangerously low levels. Please do your due diligence and have a regular blood test to monitor blood glucose level. These recipes will work best with type-2 diabetes.

If you check out the statistics in Diabetes.org close to 30 million Americans have diabetes and that number is rising with around 1.7 million new cases per year.

As of 2014, over 347 million people worldwide have diabetes, if that number doesn’t scream epidemic I don’t know what will.

This is close to my heart because my father, brother and uncle have diabetes and if I’m not careful I might get it too.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition where our bodies have elevated blood sugar levels because of two things – (1) the body does not produce insulin or (2) it does not respond well to insulin.

The first form of diabetes I described is type-1 diabetes, the 2nd which I’ll be talking about here is type-2 diabetes which accounts for 90 to 95% of diabetes cases.

We have to take this condition seriously because once you have it your whole life changes. Depending on the type of diabetes you have, you may either have to have oral medication, insulin shots or both.

When left untreated or undiagnosed this is a silent killer. Severe cases of diabetes can result to heart disease, hypoglycemia, blurred vision, and amputation.

That’s why it is important that we have our regular blood tests even if we are less than 30 years of age because this disease does not choose age. People young and old will be affected by this.

What causes diabetes?

There are five factors that play a role in diabetes (two of which you cannot control).

1. Unhealthy eating habbits

First is an unhealthy lifestyle that includes a diet rich in processed sugar, carbohydrates and red meat. Modern living has brought us a lot of great innovations, unfortunately that includes fast food that is rich in preservatives and high in sugar.

So it is no surprise that people diagnosed with diabetes have had a meteoric rise in the past few decades.

The less processed the food is the better it is for your body.

For example brown rice or wild rice would be a better option than white rice because the later contains a lot of refined carbohydrates.

The later in contrast has lots of fiber complex carbs which is considered slow release carbohydrates – these are digested more slowly preventing your body from producing too much insulin.

2. Lack of exercise

In a study done by the American Physiological Society, lack of exercise lowers the body’s sensitive and/or responsiveness to insulin which is one of the causes of diabetes [source].

Science Direct further reinforces this by stating that increased physical activity lowers the risk of IGT from progressing to type-2 diabetes. In their studies, they found that exercise increases the body’s blood glucose and free fatty acid utilization thus lowering blood glucose levels. In other words, blood glucose and fatty acid is used as energy during physical activity. [source]

3. Genes

The second way of getting diabetes is hereditary. If any of your parents have diabetes, the greater chance you have getting this ailment so you have to be very careful when any of your folks have this ailment.

Watch what you eat closely because it won’t take a lot for your body to have elevated blood sugar levels.

4. Ethnic Background

Third, your ethnic background can also play a role. According to EveryDayHealth.com, Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanics and Asian Americans are more prone to diabetes but take note that lifestyle factors play a big role like the food they eat, culture, etc.

In contrast to the list above, the Japanese probably have the healthiest diet in the world. Only 4 percent of the population are overweight and if you look closely at what they eat it’s easy to figure out why.

A traditional Japanese dish often starts off with miso soup then followed with a low calorie and high fiber mix of vegetables, fish and seafood. To wash things down, they drink a hot cup of tea instead of a cold soda.

Okinawans have a saying “Hara hachi bu” or eat until you’re 80 percent full so it’s no surprise that there aren’t many overweight Okinawans and they live longer.

In the Philippines where I live, we have a rich and diverse culture and that includes food. Unfortunately a lot of the a lot restaurants here serve foods that are rich in fat, carbohydrates and sugar, if you’re not careful you can get high cholesterol and diabetes over time.

5. Age

Forth, age is also a big factor, the older you get the more prone you will become to acquire this condition. I’ve told you earlier in this article that my dad who is about 72 years old has type-2 diabetes and he isn’t the type who eats a lot of junk food so when I heard about the news I was shocked.

Foods that cause diabetes (eating too much of these may be a triggering factor)

  • Drinks that are rich in sugar such as sodas, fruit punch, fruit drinks, energy drinks, sports drinks, sweet tea [source]
  • Candies, raisins, pancakes (and syrup), French fries, white bread, whole milk, bacon, cakes and pastries, pretzels [source]
  • Cereal grains, industrial seed oil, fructose [source]
  • White rice, regular pasta, sugary breakfast cereal, white bread, instant oatmeal, corn flakes [source]
  • Foods rich in saturated fat like regular ground beef, hot dogs, sausage, spareribs, gravy made from meat drippings, coconut oil, palm oil, poultry skin [source], [source]

The important take away here is having a balanced diet, while you can eat a piece of chocolate cake every now and then, avoid making it a part of your daily diet because it will increase your chances of diabetes.

Yes even if you’re in your 20’s (or younger), you will have to eat everything in moderation.

How to prevent diabetes?

With the right diet and enough exercise, diabetes can be prevented.

According to Harvard School of Public Health you need to do 5 things:

1. Control your weight

First you need to control your weight. Being overweight increases the risk 7 times!

Second you need to get off that lazy boy and increase your physical activity. Not only does exercise improve your muscles’ ability to use insulin and absorb glucose. It also helps you sweat and lose weight by building muscle and reducing fat inside the body.

2. Get off the freakin’ couch and exercise

Even with a simply brisk walk 30 minutes a day lessens the chance of developing type 2 diabetes by 30% [source]! Of course a more intense exercise regimen will reap more benefits, choose a workout program that will suit your fitness level.

Third watch what you eat. This in my opinion is the toughest part because we are so used to eating processed foods and some of them claim to be healthy or “sugar free”.

This can be broken down in 4 parts

1. Avoid eating processed carbohydrates like white rice, donuts, bagels, cereals (yes that includes Wheaties). Instead eat their whole grain counter parts like brown rice and whole wheat bread.

2. Avoid drinks rich in sugar, yes that includes Gatorade and other “fortified” drinks. These beverages are rich in sugar and drinking one or more servings of it per day increased the risk by 83 percent [source].

This also includes all fresh fruit juices extracted from a juicer, even though these are better than processed sugar, these are still rich in fructose that causes spikes in blood glucose levels in the blood, worst they aren’t used by the body and gets stored as fat.

Eat more “good fat” that bad fat. Good fat can be found in fish, avocado, vegetable oil, nuts and seeds while bad fats are found in fast food, chips, packaged baked goods or any product with the ingredient “partially hydrogenated vegetable oil” listed.

Limit consumption of red meat and processed meat, the former includes beef, lamb and port and the latter includes bacon, hotdog and deli meats. Eating even eating a small amount of steak per day (around 3 ounces) increase risk of diabetes by 20 percent! If you eat smaller amount of processed red per day (e.g. 2 strips of bacon) increases the risk by 51 percent! [source]

3. You need to quit smoking (if you are a smoker) because you increase your chances of getting diabetes by 50% just by puffing a cigar. [source]

4. Lastly, drinking a glass or two of alcohol per day can improve the efficiency of insulin in terms of glucose absorption by cells. Take note that moderation is the key as drinking too much can have the opposite effect. [source]

Recipes for diabetics (or people with pre-diabetes)

In the recipes first few recipes I will share here there is one common ingredient that is found in most anti-diabetes medication – bitter melon. According to diabetes.co.uk it contains 4 ingredients that help lower blood glucose levels – lectin, charantin, vicine and polypetide-p.

NYU Langone medical center says that bitter melon is so potent that when combined with medication may reduce blood sugar too much that it can fall to dangerously low levels.

That’s the good news, the bad news is bitter melon is the most bitter among all the fruits and vegetables, if you are not used to it, you can gag or vomit at the first sip.

So these recipes I’ll share with your range from the most bitter to less bitter, adding ingredients along the way to dilute the strong flavor but take note that if you are diagnosed with type-2 diabetes, stick with the first few recipes and avoid adding ingredients that has too much sugar in it.

Experts say that you should avoid eating more than 2 bitter gourds per day. Also if you are pregnant avoid drinking these because it might trigger premature contraction and bleeding which may result to a miscarriage.

The Blood Sugar Buster

  • 2 large bitter melons
  • And nothing else

My dad has type-2 diabetes and he has drunk this very bitter recipe the past few months and now is off his medication. His blood glucose levels have been below the borderline mark as well as his A1C test which measures the blood glucose levels the past three months.

This is the most concentrated form and it is very bitter but it is very potent.

Blood Sugar Busting Diuretic

  • 2 large bitter melons
  • 1 medium cucumber
  • Half a lemon

Both the cucumber and lemon will dilute the strong bitter flavor of the 2 large bitter melons but you will still feel the bitterness of this drink as you chug it down. If you’re afraid of drinking pure bitter melon juice, this is a good alternative recipe to get your taste buds acquainted to the flavor.

Slightly Sweet and Very Bitter

  • 2 large bitter melons
  • 1 medium cucumber
  • Half a lemon
  • 1 Fuji apple

If the blood sugar busting diuretic is still too strong for you then try this recipe, it is similar but I’ve added a Fuji apple in there. I love using these types of apples because they are firm and have a lot of juice but limit it to just one because we don’t want to add to much fructose into this drink.

If you prefer to use green apple that’s alright because it’s purpose is only to dilute bitterness and add flavor to this drink.

has to be physically removed because it doesn’t biodegrade, gum is pretty bad
for you in general.

Though it’s popularly believed to
help you eat less, a study published in the journal Eating Behaviors found that chewing mint-flavored gum reduced the overall intake of health food
(fruit and veg) and increased the likelihood of eating junk food. Researchers
believe this is because the minty flavour of the gum makes fruit and vegetables
taste bitter!  

Chewing gum can lead to jaw pain,
and even contribute to IBS, as you swallow extra air when chewing, which
contributes to abdominal pain and bloating. Gums is also chock full of sugar (unless
you buy sugar-free) and artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol and mannitol (unless you buy gum with
xylitol) which can cause diarrhea
and tooth decay! Chewing gum also contains Lanolin, a waxy ingredient which
makes chewing gum soft and is derived from sheep wool (vegans beware). If

system – a known neurotoxin. Eek. So rather go the natural route and juice some
