Reasons to drink pineapple juice for inflammation

Pineapple juice for inflammation

Athletes’ use pineapple juice for
inflammation, natives of Central and South America use it for pain relief, to
treat wounds, skin injuries and indigestion, and bromelain extracted from
pineapple has been approved in Germany to treat swelling and inflammation after
surgery.

We all know the spiky fruit is
delicious, but is there any truth to the claim that pineapple can help reduce
inflammation?

Aside from being a great source of
Vitamin C, pineapples contain the enzyme bromelain, which is a natural
anti-inflammatory agent that plays a role in the body’s healing process. Research
indicates that bromelain helps reduce swelling, bruising and pain in
musculoskeletal injuries, and can reduce symptoms of arthritis, bursitis and
tendonitis.

According to the American Cancer
Society and the University of Maryland Medical Center, bromelain may also help with
these 9 things:

  • Side effects of chemotherapy
  • Diarrhea and inflammation for people suffering
    from inflammatory bowel disease (IBS)
  • Digestive issues – bromelain helps your
digestive heath by breaking down the excess in your digestive tract and
    flushing it out your system
  • Blood clotting – it keeps platelets in the blood
    from sticking together
  • Arthritis due to its anti-inflammatory effect
  • Surgery, sprains and strains and tendinitis
  • Sinusitis
  • Wounds and burns
  • Infection

Although these
studies look promising, further research is needed.  The good news is, most of us who have tried pineapple for these things have had good results.  I’ve had many people in our community tell me their stories, too.

What can be stated with certainty is that the
German Commission E has approved bromelain (issued as a supplement) to treat
swelling and inflammation after surgery – a clear endorsement of its positive effects.

So if you
want to discover nature’s cure for inflammation, consider increasing your
bromelain intake by having pineapple juice for inflammation. The best store of natural bromelain is fresh pineapple, as
pineapple quickly loses its natural bromelain stores on heating. Juiced pineapple
gives you the quickest and largest dose of bromelain nature can provide!

What’s more
you’ll get a potent dose of Vitamin C at the same time, which protects the body
from damage from free radicals and boosts the immune system. Vitamin C, as most
of us know, decreases the severity of colds and infections. It also builds and
repairs body tissue and promotes wound healing.

Vitamin C
may even help prevent high blood pressure and diabetes, according to Oregan
State University’s Linus Pauling Institute, which publishes research on the
role
of vitamins and micronutrients in enhancing
human health and preventing chronic diseases.

Pineapple is
also a
rich source of Manganese, Potassium and
Thiamine. Pineapples actually contain over 90% the Daily Value (DV) of
Manganese, which is needed for strong bone growth and health – just another reason
many athletes regularly drink pineapple juice!

Pineapple juice for inflammation concerns

There aren’t really any dangers in using pineapple juice for inflammation or any other purpose, but caution is advised for pregnant women, as excessive pineapple juice may cause uterine contractions, which can lead to a miscarriage.

Also make sure your pineapple is ripe before you can juice or eat it whole! A ripe pineapple is heavy, a little soft (gives in a bit with a slight squeeze), and you should be able to smell its sweet scent at the base. Unripe fruit can cause runny stools, vomiting or even skin rashes so always make sure you eat fresh, ripe fruit and monitor your body’s response to it – if you feel bad, don’t consume it.

Because bromelain is a natural blood thinner, you shouldn’t add pineapple juice to your diet if you take blood thinning medications, as it can increase your risk of bleeding.

To be on the safe side, I always advise consulting with your physician before making any dietary change. He/she may advise against adding pineapple juice to your regular diet or adjust your medication to allow for increased bromelain intake.

Last but not least, one cup of pineapple has only 83 calories and between 16 and 22 grams of sugar, so monitor your intake if you’re trying to lose weight. Make sure you juice the core and stem to increase the nutritional qualities and get the greatest stores of bromelain.

Ultimately, if you want a natural way to aid your body’s healing, aid in a healthy lifestyle and satisfy your sweet tooth, fresh, organic juiced pineapples are the way forward.  Below I’ve paired it with turmeric which has proven inflammatory fighting properties.  Read more about turmeric here.

“No more pain” pineapple-turmeric juice recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 1/2 pineapple
  • 2 inches turmeric root
  • 1/2 head romaine lettuce
  • 1 cucumber

METHOD

Cut the pineapple into long spears.  Cut the romaine lettuce into smaller, juice-able sections.  Cut the cucumber into spears.  Juice the cucumber, romaine, turmeric and pineapple together.  Serve immediately.

Optional variations for the “no more pain” juice recipe

  • Switch out the romaine and add one sweet potato.  This juice blend will be thick, but it is high in many other pain-supportive nutrients.  Sweet potatoes are high in carotenoids which have been known to strengthen the immune and minimize inflammation.
  • If you’re concerned about sugar, only use 1/4 of the pineapple.
  • If you want to blend instead of use your juicer, blend 1 cup of pineapple chunks with 1 tsp of turmeric powder and some water.  It’s quick and easy.

Relieve pain with this tropical turmeric juice | juicing turmeric

Tropical Turmeric Juice

I have a great recipe for you today. My hope is that this will help you relieve pain with this tropical turmeric juice.  It’s anti-inflammatory, helps to relieve pain and is very island-like (because who doesn’t want to feel like they are on a sun-filled beach?).

I’ve also added a creamy twist to make it special. You won’t even notice its part green 🙂

I used my Champion Juicer to make this juice.  While I have a lot of juicers, you might know that I really love the Champion and it’s the one I go back to over and over.

It was my first juicer and I still have it.   It’s very durable and easy to clean.

I find that when the same produce is juiced in the Champion side by side with other juicers, it often yields more juice.

I recommend it because it’s a good value for the money and juices at a low speed/temp to keep more nutrients in your cup.

TROPICAL TURMERIC PAIN RELIEVER JUICE

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 large carrots
  • 4 rings of pineapple
  • 2 celery stalks
  • 1 head of romaine lettuce leaves
  • 1-2 inches fresh turmeric root
  • Optional: 2 tbsp coconut milk

DIRECTIONS

Cut half of a pineapple into spears or rings.  It’s fine to juice the rind and the core.
Juice the carrots, celery, pineapple, romaine and turmeric together, alternating.  Mix with a spoon to combine and serve immediately.

Optional: Add the coconut milk to the recipe.  Coconut milk helps with the absorption of the turmeric. To optimize the healing powers of turmeric, you must take it with a little bit of fat.  Turmeric is fat-soluble, meaning it dissolves in fat. Without fat, the active component in turmeric, curcumin, has a harder time making it’s way into the bloodstream.  If you’d like, you could also add a teaspoon of coconut oil, but I find this less appetizing.

WHY I LOVE THIS JUICE

Pineapple and turmeric are extremely anti-inflammatory.  Not all juices can successfully blend with the turmeric taste, but this one does.  Turmeric is an amazing spice, and you can learn more about  turmeric here.  It has curcumin in it, and multiple research studies have shown that curcumin’s anti-inflammatory properties compare to those of ibuprofen, phenylbutazone and hydrocortisone. So yes, this juice might help with pain and headaches. As far as the other ingredients go, celery may help to calm nerves.  By adding in carrots and greens, it’s a well rounded juice to nourish your body.  It’s my tropical pain reliever in a cup 🙂

If you have some pain or inflammation give this a try.  I’ve love to know how it works for you.  After you’ve tried it, leave a comment below.

Oh My, It’s KALE-licious! (Kale Juice Recipes!)

6

Kale juice recipes

Kale is not widely available in the Philippines.

So when my wife saw one in a grocery, I asked her to buy a pack just to try it out.

At first, I thought that it will be as bitter as mustard greens, but I’m pleased to say that it turned out pretty good, better than expected.

So far, I’ve concocted around three recipes that had kale in it.

During my search for juice recipes.

I noticed that Kale is a popular ingredient and it is said to be one of the most nutritious vegetables with minimal calorie content.

What are those benefits?

Kale is known as the “queen of greens” for its high nutrient content and antioxidants.  It also contains zeaxanthin and lutein which are good for your eyes.

Did you know that a cup of chopped kale will give you 684% of your daily requirements of Vitamin K, 206% of Vitamin A and 134% of Vitamin C?

Vitamin K contains antioxidants which reduces the risk of cancer.  Based on a study done by the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, it is a vital nutrient that strengthens bones and normalizes blood clots.

Although, doctors warn that excessive Vitamin K can be an issue for people taking anticoagulant medication.

Helps lower cholesterol

Kale contains around 3.6 grams of fiber (per 100 grams) that bind bile acids.  These acids flush out bad cholesterol and lower risks of heart disease. Experts at WebMD recommend that Kale has to be cooked to maximize this benefit.

Oxalates

Kale is part of the cruciferous family of vegetables, containing oxalates (an anti-nutrient/toxin) that can hamper our body’s ability to absorb calcium and cause side effects.

Recent studies show that kale is not a Goitrogenic food, which slows down the function of thyroid.

However, this school of thought has been debated by nutritionists and medical experts.

Should I be worried about consuming too much oxalate?

The key here is balance, rotate the vegetables you put in the juicer. It can’t be kale or broccoli every day.

You have to throw in a little bit of bell pepper, squash, eggplant, zucchini, celery, cucumber, beet, carrots and green beans. Experiment and mix it up, that’s what juicing is all about.

Remember that “all things are poison and nothing is without poison. It is the dose that makes a thing poisonous.” – Paracelsus, 16th century pharmacologist.

Without further ado, here are some KALE-licious Recipes!

I’ve learnt that there are 50 varieties of kale, but for my recipes, I had to settle with organic Australian kale since it’s the only kind I could find.

Recipe 1

Kale Recipe 1

2 to 3 kale leaves (I included the stem)
1 carrot
2 apple
1/2 lemon (with the skin)
1 cucumber

This recipe will yield roughly half a liter of sweet KALE-licious juice. I didn’t taste any bitterness as it was masked by the lemon, carrot and apple combo.

This would be great for people who are juicing kale for the first time.

Recipe 2

Kale Recipe 2

1 to 2 kale leaves
A small handful of spinach
1 carrot
1 cucumber
1 apple
1 lemon (with the skin on)
A small handful of basil

This will yield slightly more than the first recipe, around 750ml.

This one will be lemony.

If you don’t like the lemon sourness, replace it with lime or ginger for that added kick.

Recipe 3

Kale Recipe 3

2 to 3 kale leaves
1/3 bitter melon (optional)
A handful of spinach
1/2 thumb ginger
2 carrots
2 apples
2 zucchini

This will yield around 900ml of lightly pungent, sweet and bitter juice with a kick. This is a great pre-breakfast drink that’ll give you that needed jolt to jumpstart your day. If the bitterness is too much, skip the bittermelon.

By the way, bitter melon (it is called ampalaya in our country) is great for people with diabetes.

My dad drinks a small glass of pure bitter melon juice every day (don’t know if I could do that)! And it has helped him keep his blood sugar at normal levels.

That’s it, 3 natural, nutrient rich KALE-licious recipes that you can add to your own list.

If you’ve tried any of these or have concocted your own, please let me know by commenting below.

And if you like any of these recipes, do me a small favour, by spreading the word.

5 benefits of green juice

What are the top 5 benefits of green juice?  When I decided to
highlight the top 5 benefits of green juice, it was a tough choice. How do you
cherry-pick between so many amazing benefits that range from skin to energy to
health and more? It was time to get ruthless.

So, now in no particular order of wonderfulness, I’m
going to outline the top 5 benefits of juicing that I’ve found in my life, and
hope it inspires you to add a little more green juicing in yours.

benefits of green juice

1.  More nutrients, more variety, less time

If
over 95% of the vitamins, minerals and enzymes we need are found in raw fruits
and vegetables, doesn’t it make sense to eat more fruit and vegetables? The
problem is that to get all those healthy vitamins and minerals, we’d have to
eat masses of fruit and vegetables, probably more than most of us could handle.

And
with soil depletion and pesticides and the ravages of modern agriculture, our
food is just not as nutritious as it once was. We need to eat more to fill our
quota of minerals and vitamins, and we have less time than ever to do so.
Juicing helps us cover all our nutritional bases without having to take a bunch
of vitamins as supplements because we simply don’t have time to make and source
optimal food.

When
you juice, concentrated vitamins, minerals and enzymes rapidly enter your
bloodstream, which are quickly absorbed by your body – providing instant energy
and giving your digestive system a much needed rest. When
juicing, you can easily meet your recommended daily intake of vegetables every
day…with just a glass or two of juice, made with minimal effort and cleaning.

2.  Improved digestion

Green juices are easy to digest. Because they’re already liquid, your body no longer needs to work hard
to break down the food in order to extract the nutrients. When you juice, all
the essential
nutrients in your fruits and vegetables become readily available for your body
to absorb and use.

For
those of us who have ever suffered indigestion after a heavy meal, or even
after a healthy serving of vegetables like cauliflower,
cabbage, broccoli, or leafy green veg such as kale, spinach, chard or parsley,
you’ll agree that some foods are easier to digest than others. The reason for
this, is that vegetable are high in both soluble and insoluble fiber. And large
amounts of insoluble fiber can be bad for your gut. Juicing helps avoid this
because you remove the fiber and cellulose, making it easier on your digestive system.

3.  Energy

Energy is definitely one of 5 benefits of green juice.  It takes a lot of energy to do
everything you need to do in life, and there’s never enough. Fruit is a good
source of energy, but because its high sugar content (which is quickly
metabolized), energy comes in short bursts.  Greens help you balance the sugar content
which keeps your energy stable for longer. Greens also help your body
mineralize, and ensure optimal pH levels, which also boosts your energy.

As I explained above, juicing fruits and vegetables makes
them easily digestible, which means that the energy spent on digestion can be
used for other activities. Green juicing allows me to have longer lasting
energy, which means less sleep and more productivity!

4.  Health

There is a growing body of
research into the healing properties of juicing. Not only will juicing help
with weight loss, boost energy levels, strengthen bones and result in a glowing
complexion, it may lead to reduced chances of heath disease, cancer and stroke.

Fresh, green juices also reduce
inflammation in your body and according to Christine Lydon, MD, of Yale Medical
School “inflammatory processes lie at the root of virtually every chronic
disease process known to modern man – from obesity and diabetes to heart
disease and cancer.”

Green juices contain chlorophyll
(aka liquid sunshine) which increases red cell production and enhances your
cell’s ability to carry oxygen. Should you live in a country where sunshine is in scarce
supply, increasing greens in your diet could even help you obtain some of this
stored sunshine. If Anne Wigmore, pioneer of wheat grass juice and
raw, living foods, is to be believed: “consuming
chlorophyll is like receiving a healthy blood transfusion.”

Green
juices are high in magnesium and helps your body absorb calcium better. Green
plants contain Vitamin C and A, which are also important for calcium absorption.
Greens are naturally alkalizing, which helps regulate the
pH balance in your body fight the damage caused by free radicals. A high
alkaline diet supports cellular regeneration, improves mental sharpness and
helps reduce disease – making you feel healthier than ever before.

5.  Beauty

Yep, this is number one for most, because who doesn’t want to look
their best? In fact, all the benefits we’ve mentioned so far lead to beauty,
because when your body is well-nourished and well-hydrated, packed full of
vitamins, minerals and enzymes, it performs at its best. And you will quickly
show the benefits.

Green veggie juices can be the change that helps prevent aging
and give you an increased zest for life – because you’re eating a wider variety
of vegetables in larger quantities, which in turn will leave you better
hydrated, more nourished, and feeling on top of the world.

A recent study by St Andrews University revealed the beneficial effects
of fruit and vegetables in our daily diets; volunteers who increased their
consumption of fresh produce found an improvement in their skin tone which ‘glowed.’
And it’s not just the appearance of our skin that juicing can improve; the high
vitamin, antioxidant and mineral content of green juices helps with everything
from hair loss and acne, to weight gain and aging.

It’s the added hydration and power-packed dose of nutrients that bring
about your luminous complexion.  Green juicing can also help you discover
any potential allergies, by cutting out refined and processed products in favor
of green juices you can pinpoint what’s causing any intolerances – such as
dairy or gluten.

With green juicing you get greater health, better digestion, more
time and energy, and you look slimmer, with better hair, skin and nails, and
increased mental focus. I’d say that’s worth a glass or two. Get the 5 benefits of green juice by starting out with one of our green juice recipes.

Guilt-Free Green Strawberry Juice

10

Green Strawberry Juice

I admit it, I have a sweet tooth and it goes all the way back.

When I was around 5 or 6, I loved to drink strawberry shake, whenever I had the opportunity I’d order it when me and my mom went out for breakfast.

Now that I’m in my late 30’s I don’t drink strawberry shake anymore because it does have a lot of sugar in it with all that liquid sweetener that they put in to make it sweet.

Whenever I get an urge to have strawberry juice, I’d concoct this recipe.

What’s great about this recipe is that you can mix in a lot of greens in it and you wouldn’t even notice that it was there.

You can give this to your kids and they’d ask for more because it does taste like strawberry puree.

What are the benefits of strawberry?

Strawberries are one of the healthiest fruits, loaded with lots of anti-oxidants, vitamins and minerals. It also is known to be sodium, cholesterol and fat free.

The red color of strawberry contains anthocyanins that help burn stored fat and boost short term memory.

An anti-inflammatory

Strawberries based on studies, will help in lowering down blood levels of C-reactive protein which is the primary culprit of inflammation in the body.

Helps build our bone strength

If you’re lactose intolerant, strawberry juice might be a good substitute for this. Strawberries contain vitamin K, potassium and magnesium that helps strengthen our bones.

Other benefits

  • It helps boost our immunity
  • Help prevent macular degeneration which will result in blindness
  • Has anti-aging properties
  • Lowers risk of cardiovascular diseases
  • Rich in fiber – good for your gut

Contains oxalates

If you happen to suffer from any sort of gallbladder or kidney problems then you may want to consult your doctor first before consuming strawberries as it contains oxalates that will interfere with the absorption of calcium.

Now to the recipe

Green Strawberry Juice

9 strawberries
A bunch of spinach (I included the stems), if you only have the leaves available that’s fine
3 celery ribs
2 apples
1 large carrot

You’ll notice a lime in there that I didn’t include in the juice. My wife asked me not to include it and it came out great!

Strawberry on its own is a little bit sour, apple really brings out the strawberry sweetness in this drink, carrot also adds a bit of sweetness and it also adds to the liquid content, that’s why I’m able to make around 700ml.

The beauty of this recipe is the amount of green leafy vegetables you can add to it without even noticing it. If your kids don’t like to eat raw vegetables, give them this drink and they would not know that you’ve added spinach and celery in it. They’ll probably ask for more.

If you’re using a horizontal masticating juicer, you’ll notice that strawberry comes out a little bit thick, almost like a smoothie but that’s perfectly normal. In fact I like it.

Mix it up

You can replace spinach with kale or collard greens, and celery with asparagus or another vegetable. That’s the beauty of this, you can mix and match the greens and still get roughly the same flavour.

If you’ve tried this recipe, I’d like you to tell me about it by leaving a comment below.

And If you liked it, please do spread the word.

Lemon Juice for Heartburn Remedy

Have heartburn?  Juice this for a quick, easy remedy.

Lemons for heartburn

If you
think I’m crazy for suggesting lemon juice for heartburn or acid
reflux, you’re not alone.  When I had first heard of this I also thought
it sounded crazy.  But when you look to science, you’ll see it makes
perfect sense.

If you’ve ever felt a burning sensation in your chest or throat, trouble
swallowing, nausea after eating or an undignified urge to burp, or even pain
when lying down or bending, you probably already know you’re one of the
millions of people who suffer from heartburn.

Also known as acid reflux or, if sufferers experience symptoms more than
twice a week, as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), it can have a detrimental
effect on your health, and happiness.

So what helps cause heartburn?

Most heartburn sufferers will experience symptoms after a large, overly
rich meal. Food that is highly acidic or irritates the stomach, such spicy and
high-fat foods are cause of heartburn, as well as chocolate, tomatoes and
tomato products, alcohol, caffeine and fizzy drinks, according to
Livestrong.com. Nutritionist Kelly Snyder also ranks constipation or poor
elimination, and excess belly fat as contributing factors.

The problem is the solution

When talking about acidic foods, citrus fruit such as
lemons is sometimes mentioned as trigger for heartburn. So why do we suggest
juicing lemons as a solution for heartburn? This comes down to a common
misconception about lemons.

The fact that lemons are acidic (pH is below 7), is incontrovertible.
However, inside the body,
things change. When lemon juice has been fully metabolized and its minerals are
dissociated in the bloodstream, it has an alkalizing effect and therefore
raises the pH of body tissue (pH above 7 is alkaline).  Dr. Mee Lain Ling,
a registered doctor of traditional Chinese medicine, urges us to note the
difference. Although they taste sour, lemons are thus alkaline forming – which
means they actually help neutralize acidity in your stomach.

So if you suffer from heartburn, juice lemons as part of
your regular juicing routine – I love adding fresh lemon juice to my green
juices, or squeezing it into a carrot and apple juice for some extra zing. And
if you need an instant heartburn fix, try squeezing a dash of lemon into a
glass of water and seeing if it improves your symptoms.

Dr. Ling also suggests using lemon juice to see how acidic
your body currently is. If you drink lemon juice in hot or warm water and it
tastes very sour, your body is very acidic. If it tastes like lemonade to you
(without the sugar) your body is in a healthier, more alkaline state! Depending
on your ratio of lemon juice to water, your body’s level of acidity and how
often you take lemon water, eventually your lemon-water shouldn’t taste sour at
all! Do try this at home and let me know how sour/acidic you are feeling or if
life just keeps giving you lemonade.

Benefits of lemons

Apart from helping you with acidity, lemons have been used for centuries to treat various sicknesses,
for stain removal, and even to clean the house. They help keep your skin clear
and radiant, assist in weight loss and even repel mosquitos.

Lemons reduce
blood pressure, detoxify the blood and organs, and reduce mucus build up in the
body. They’ve even been used in Chinese medicine to help reduce abnormal fluid
discharge (sweating, incontinence, bed wetting). If that’s not enough, lemons
are good for dental health, they reduce sweet, pastry and gluten cravings, help
with allergies and digestive disorders, chronic fatigue and diseases caused by
an acidic environment, and boost overall immunity.

Lemon
provides vitamin C, A, pectin and fiber to the body, as well as minerals such
as like calcium, selenium and potassium. Lemon
juice is also a natural anti-inflammatory and helps muscles detoxify by
increasing glutathione levels (a powerful antioxidant) within the body. It also
helps cleanse the body of impurities that disrupt the functioning of kidneys
and intestinal organs, as these are directly or indirectly related to acid
reflux. So whether it’s in a juice or squeezed in a herbal tea or glass of
water, drink some lemon juice for heartburn every day for optimal health and let’s make
heartburn a thing of the past.

Lemon-Infused Heartburn Remedy Juice

This juice will not only help you to recover from heartburn but will help to alkalize the entire body.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 lemon
  • 1 apple
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 tbsp aloe juice

DIRECTIONS

Cut the lemon in half.  Core and cut the apple.  Cut the cucumber into spears.  Juice the apple, lemons and cucumber together.  Add the aloe in and mix to combine.  Aloe helps soothe the stomach and calm heartburn as well.

Quick Lemon Water Recipe

If you don’t have time to juice, try squeezing one lemon in 1 glass of water.  Add aloe juice if you have it for an added benefit.  If you prefer some sweetness, add a drop or two of liquid stevia.

Beet-Kale Super Juice

1

I’ve featured Kale and Beet juice recipes here before and I thought to myself, why not combine them? They’re two of the most nutrient dense foods out there and both have distinct flavors.

Beet-Kale Super Juice

Beet has this odd combination of sweet and earthy, some people call it “sweet dirt”. If you drink it in its purest form, it’ll be like drinking dirt but when combined with an ingredient like apple, the inner sweetness will be highlighted and the earthy flavor will subside.

Beets are rich in natural nitrates, considered to be brain food and is said to help in giving our body an energy boost. Cyclists who drink a 500ml serving of pure beet root juice ride up to 20% longer. This beats taking Red Bull in the morning.

This root crop is also known to boost sexual health (some call it nature’s Viagra). It is also called “a super antioxidant” that helps prevent heart disease, cancer, inflammation and diabetes.

Kale on the other hand is bitter and you’d have to be a real hard core juice junkie to drink it pure.

This nutritional powerhouse is rich in iron, vitamin A, C, K, calcium as well as antioxidants like carotenoids and flavonoids. These nutrients help our cardiovascular health, skin and eyesight. It also helps in cancer prevention and is a great “detox food”.

You’ll get all these nutrients minus the fat and a cup of kale only has 36 calories.

Combine these two ingredients and you’ll get a super juice that’ll flood your body with nutrients.

Here’s the recipe

Beet-Kale Ingredients

2 kale leaves
A handful of spinach
1 beet root (peeled)
1 carrot
1 thumb ginger (optional)

You’ll notice that the ginger is not included in the photo above. I just added it in the last minute after I’ve chopped up all the ingredients so I wasn’t able to include it in the photo.

Ginger adds a kick to this juice and will really wake you up in the morning. If you have a hangover, try drinking this and see what happens.

This recipe will only yield roughly 225ml which is slightly less than a can of coca cola, good for only one person.

I peeled the beet even though it was organic but that’s just my personal preference, you can leave the skin on. I didn’t include the tops (should have known better) but that’s a mistake, it is also a source of nutrients so include it.

How to prepare?

If you’re using a centrifugal juicer, pack the spinach in-between the two halves of beet so that you get the maximum yield. If you’re using a vertical auger juicer, chop up the spinach into small quarter sized inch pieces so it doesn’t clog up the pulp ejector.

Pink Lemonade Juice Recipe

This is the ultimate pink lemonade juice recipe.  It’s a bit more pink then traditional pink lemonade, but it tastes spot on.  Bonus: It’s detoxifying and liver cleansing.

The healthiest Pink Lemonade juice recipe

When I was a little girl my family would often vacation in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

We’d take the old Ford down route 95, and after a 13 hour drive, we made it!

All we wanted to do was soak up the sun and go to some tasty restaurants.

One of my favorite places was a Southern
style log cabin that had, you guessed it, PINK lemonade!  I’d order it
every time, even though it was cooler to order the sweet tea.

I didn’t know what really made it pink, and I was a kid, so I didn’t care.  It was so good and so cool.  Anything pink is cool (of course).

Today, I now know that the pink lemonade I had was really just sugar-flavored water.

So, I won’t be having that anymore… but I do have this.

I’ve made a hot pink lemonade that’s to die for.  It’s healthy, contains NO white sugar and is absolute yum.

I have it all times of the year, not just in the summer…because, why not? 🙂

The juice ingredients and the benefits

This juice is rich in iron and pectin.   Beets, lemons and apples together create a highly nourishing and detoxifying cocktail for your entire body but particularly your liver.

APPLES  The peel and pulp are rich in anti-inflammatories, antioxidants and
fiber.  The nutrients present in apples may help to slow the signs of
aging and improve some bodily functions.  They may even help deter the
development of certain chronic health conditions.

LEMONS  Lemons have a tart, acidic flavor but an alkalizing effect once they arrive in the stomach. Like vitamin C, certain flavonoids in lemon (specifically hesperetin,
naringin and naringenin) have antioxidant properties,
helping to prevent cell damage from free radicals.  They can also act
as anti-inflammatories.  The potassium in lemon helps to regulate the
pulse and promotes the maintenance of normal blood pressure.

BEETS  Beet contain several vitamins, minerals and other beneficial nutrients.
Pyridoxine (vitamin B6), folate (vitamin B9), vitamin C, copper, iron,
magnesium, manganese, potassium, phosphorus and fiber are all present in
substantial amounts and contribute to overall health and well-being.
Beets are also an excellent source of betalains, a group of
phytonutrient pigments that research indicates can provide support for
anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and detoxifying mechanisms. Recent research on cancerous human cells indicates that some of the
betalains in beets might inhibit their growth – specifically, tumor
cells taken from colon, stomach, nerve, lung, breast, prostate, and
testicular tissue.

Pink Lemonade

Here’s the Hot Pink Lemonade recipe

This makes enough for 2 small glasses or juice or one large glass
(16 ounces).

INGREDIENTS

2 apples

2 lemons, peel on

1 red beet

METHOD

Core the apples and cut them into wedges.  Cut the lemons in quarters.  Cut the beet into quarters.

Juice the beet, apples and lemons together. Mix it together and serve
immediately.

Optional variations for the Hot Pink Lemonade

If you don’t like the sourness of lemons:  The essential oils in the lemon peels really pack a nutritional punch and helps your body to detox.  Some people find the lemon peels a little too sour to juice.  If this is you, no problem, just remove them before juicing.

If you want less sweet:  I don’t think this recipe is too sweet, but if you’re really watching your sugar intake, only use one apple and add 1 zucchini to the ingredient list.

If you like a thin, watery juice:  If you like a watery lemonade, add about 1/2 to 1 cup of water to stretch the recipe and make it weaker.

Enjoy!  Let me know what you think of it below.
