I got this to replace my old waffle maker, it was also a Hamilton Beach. It wasn’t fancy but it was simple and compact and got the job done. This maker is also very decent. The waffles come out crispy on the outside, fluffy in the inside and this is just using an off the shelf just-add-water mix.

The only advice I have is to very liberally spray with nonstick cooking spray because I forgot to once and it was very difficult pulling off the waffles. The non stick coating on this maker is pretty useless.

I like that it has a place on the bottom to wrap up the cord and stands easily upright for convenient storing. It is a little bigger than I expected but this isn’t an issue because of it’s ease of storing.

Update 4/27/2014: Still works great. I thought I would have difficulty keeping it clean but it wipes down easily with a damp cloth – no soap or chemicals needed especially because I like to wipe it down while its still hot as its like steam cleaning itself then. Also the non-stick factor is less of an issue, as the plates have become seasoned from my continual application of non-stick spray (I use it at least once a week) so if I forget to spray now and then its a non issue, the waffles still slip off with ease.

The trick to Belgian waffles seems to be to turn the waffle during baking, to make sure the batter fills all the depressions and you get an evenly-baked, light waffle. To that end, there are all kinds of interesting wafflers that turn the unit, such as the West Bend and other models that rotate the heated iron on a pivot. In this case, the waffler makes SQUARE waffles, four of them, so it’s a bit more efficient at breakfast because it make two adult servings at a time while the round style ones usually make one waffle (though there is a model that makes two.)

So it comes down to price and shape–I like square waffles although I have nothing against round ones. As to the rotating function? Here, you just flip the entire waffler over during cooking. That means that this unit is a lot smaller, about the size of a small panini grill and you can stow it under the counter when you are not using it. I’ve recommended this unit to a number of acquaintances, and they report they are quite happy with it.

One additional comment; if you like very light, crisp waffles, there is a trick to making them come out that way. When making the batter, separate your eggs. Beat the white separately, until it makes soft peaks (stop before stiff peaks or the egg white starts to break down and it’s hard to fold in and it gets dry.) Make up your batter with the egg yolks alone, and at the very last, fold the egg whites in gently. When you bake the waffle, it will be lighter. This trick is especially helpful for gluten-free batters, which tend to be heavier especially if they include potato starch. Another fact is that butter makes for the best waffles–I use melted butter as the fat. However, if you are against butter, oil will work, but it must have some oil.

Summary: this waffler works well. I’ve never had the waffles stick, and I’ve used this for a decade. It does the job and stows away because it’s compact. It’s not as showy and fun as a rotating waffle iron, but it works just as well.

Only used it once so far, but loved the way my waffles came out! They were crisp on the outside, soft and moist inside, and these were whole wheat whole grain homemade. Even the dogs begged for more. Pluses: Fast for waffles (no more than 4minutes per, and that was only the first. Came back to full temp even before the batch cooking was finished. Just watch for the steaming to slow down almost to a stop. Fill with a ladle right in the middle of each grid, but don’t overfill. You’ll get it after the first batch. I did spray the grids because I threw in some frozen blueberries and nothing stuck. Cons: Only that you have to clean it without really washing it, meaning no soaking. Never feel it’s clean, but for the size and price well worth that one problem. A lot of the moderate priced waffle makers are like this. Start to finish made 12 filling waffles in 1/2 hour. If anyone wants a recipe let me know! Esp. recommended for anyone who wants to control what’s put in their food. Freeze your own healthy waffles.
