This is a reasonably capable toaster oven. It toasts bread relatively evenly and is an easy alternative to using my full-sized oven for re-heating small items. Even though there is only a single heating element on the top and bottom, it does a good job. The toaster oven comes with a crumb tray for the bottom, a wire rack and a drip tray/baking pan.

It has 4 modes: warm, broil, bake, toast. In warm and broil mode, only the top heating element is used, In bake and toast mode, both heating elements are used.

As a broiler it’s fine for small things. Quick batches of nachos are a natrual for this toaster oven.

Making toast in this is not quite the same as with a toaster. Since the bottom side of the toast is on the wire rack you end up with “zebra” toast. With this you set the “darkness” level using the timer. It’s imprecise and you really need to keep an eye on what’s going on or you could eaisly end up with burnt-to-a-crisp toast. Once you get the “feel” for the toaster oven though, it works quite well.

The power cord is only 2′ long for safety reasons. A small plastic knob on the back of the oven is to ensure you don’t get this too close to a wall. I was concerned that using this on a counter might get the counter too hot, but that hasn’t been an issue so far. I haven’t used it for longer than 5-10 mintues at a time though.

The plug is 3-prong and requires a grounded outlet.

The description on Amazon uses the phrase “Exclusive Even Toast Technology”. Not entirely sure what that means, to be honest. Sounds like marketing bunk from the manufacturer. What matters to me is what the item in my house actually does not what the MarketingSpeak says.

Before I used this, I read several reviews that said it didn’t have even toasting, which to me would seem to be the entire point of a “Toaster Oven”. I disagree with that strongly. My “toast tests” showed quite the opposite. In fact, it had a little bit of a “grill mark” on the bottom for the toast due to it resting on the grate. But once I learned what setting to put the toast in, it was great. I do admit the first few tries were either TOO DARK or too light, but that’s kind of a learning curve with any toaster, can’t fault this unit.

What I’ve done with it is mostly toasting, and heating of things like frozen waffles and whanot. This is called a “Toaster Oven”, and I’ve used it mostly for toast. The knob that controls how well done toast is done seems to skew mostly towards people that like darker toast. I say that because I tend to like mine lighter. The way you make toast in this thing is to turn the knob up to the highest setting and then “back” to where you want it to go. There are three indicators on the scale – the highest being totally black, and the lowest being “totally white”. I usually end up about halfway between the lowest and one. If someone puts their toast up to the blackest setting, it would be really charred, I would think. I should sacrifice a piece of bread to try that. 🙂 You will definitely need to try some experimentation, as severity of toasting is a highly personal issue. Oh, english muffins – I find these toast better than plain bread, but I think that’s down to me liking english muffins better.

Anyways, I have not tried much other than various grilled bread products, but several other reviews say that the advertised pizza size can be an issue due to size of pan. I don’t have experience with that, but I do with the bread. They say that you can fit four slices of bread in here, and while you can, it is a tight fit. I have included a few pictures of bread in the oven in my review (see photos section). The old school square white bread slices are the only kind you can fit four in there with. And even then, they push off the back of the grate and up against the overall back wall of the unit. The instruction manual has a picture of four slices on the rack, evenly spaced with plenty of buffer space between then. That is CERTAINLY not the reality of bread on this. If you tend to use the kind of bread that is sold a lot (like Orowheat bands and the like), you can only fit two slices on there; zero chance at four there. Again, check out the pictures in the user photo section of this product.

There are several trays that come with this unit (three in all), so they intend you to cook different kinds of things besides just toast. However, unless you’re looking for a serving of one of say Tater Tots for the “oven” part of this toaster oven, you’re better off in a more full sized oven.

Despite my talking about the size of bread a lot, I do like the thing. I’ve already replaced the more traditional two slice toaster that has lived in our house for ages, mostly because of the future possibilities of this unit. Despite my using it almost exclusively for toasting so far, I rather like it. So I’m hopeful my positive experiences with this toaster oven extend well beyond what I’ve run into toast wise.

Inexpensive yet functional toaster oven, easy to use and clean, looks sharp too!, January 28, 2014

I bought this elsewhere for $29.95 and am very happy with it. It bakes, broils, toasts, and warms. The three dials are easy to set, included is a quick start sheet for functions; the dials (function, time, temperature) are shown in the positions necessary for each function. I find the oven big enough for 4 pieces of bread, although I don’t use it for that, I have a vintage chrome beast of a toaster for regular bread. In this I do toast large pieces of bread like fresh French bread. There is a removable crumb tray at bottom, a sliding rack and drip tray that fits below the rack (remove this for some uses). It is suggested you preheat and I find this to be of a minimum time so you can get almost right to it. I bought this for small baking and broiling needs as I live alone and feel that I am wasting power by using a large electric oven for all needs. This does exactly what I want it to. The instruction sheet comes in English, Spanish and French languages and is sufficient, along with quick start guide, to understand how to set dials for desired use. Three prong power plug for safety. Seems to be well made for this low price but time will tell of course. The timer will ring when complete and can also be set for Stay On. I’m sure you burn some things if you don’t watch it, like with toasting which would take a bit of experimenting with time for different types of breads.

This review is from: Breville Smart Oven Pro BOV845BSS (Kitchen)
This model is exclusive with this vendor and is the same as the Breville BOV800Xl. The diffrences appear to be limited to an interior light and a long 10 hour slow cook feature. It comes with a metal pizza pan plus a two piece broiler pan. I purchased this unit at the local SurLaTable store. Accessories like a pizza stone, pizza crisper and bamboo serving tray are pretty expensive and you can easily end up with a $400 appliance. Having said that, it looks nicer in our kitchen than our large Cuisinart convection oven which is now 5 or 6 years old and still going strong. The stainless finish looks very up to date and the buttons and screen are very nice and easy to use – very intuitive to use. The Breville has magnets in the door the help pull out the cooking tray a few inches when you open the door. This is a good safety feature as the cooking trays get very hot. With the Cuisinart I always have to have a glove handy. Still need the glove handy but t least you can see if your food is cooked sufficiently without having to pull out the tray. The interior light is 25 watts and easily lets you see the food being cooked without opening the oven door.

We haven’t given the Breville a workout yet so I’ll leave it to the thousands who have to elaborate on how well the Breville performs. In looking at the reviews here and elsewhere it appears that a couple of years ago people complained that Brevilles required repairs after two years or so. Hopefully Breville has addressed these issues since there is only a 1 year warranty and for this price you expect reliability.

I have read good and bad reviews on this product, The seller states there is an auto eject rack and there is but it only works on the the middle position for toast not top position for broil or bottom position for bake. No other complaints; so far all is well. Very easy to use amd looks wonderful.

I still love this little oven, clean design, a decent performance.
I give only 4 stars , because this my second experience with Smart Oven, the older model 800XL, I owned for about 4 years and had some issues:
    LCD display
    Door did not close properly
    Annoying noisy fan
Poor technical support with no availability parts. ex. a spring for door cost about $3, and I don’t agree to buy a new unit because Breville did not supply some parts.
I wish not to have same or other problem with this model and they like a wise company they learned something .

I may revisit and update my review.
